Hip Hop
"Street dancing" as it is often referred to involves
popping and locking in a less technical style. Baggy clothing
and a dance sneaker is required. Most classes are co-ed
and great for a beginner student because the style and physical
challenges are always changing.
Ballet
For the older student, ballet technique requires much more
concentration and discipline in order to execute the movement
detail properly. Barre work, port de bras, stretching and
strengthening exercises are balanced. Ballet builds a strong
foundation of coordination, appreciation of art, and an
expressive achievement which are great assets for any endeavor.
A leotard, tights and pink ballet shoes are required.
Tap
The art of tap dance involves the full body. Good tap dancing
is performed with control, speed and smoothness. Movements
of the arms, legs, and body are incorporated with tap steps.
In our graded tap form, the exercises and combinations directly
develop a sense of coordination, body control, the rhythmic
sense and the detailed development of the feet. Black, soft
tap shoes are required.
Jazz
Jazz is a dramatic movement experience that encourages rhythmic
movements, gestures and mimicry. Popular music stimulates
the movement, accompanies it and motivates it. High energy,
exhilaration and freedom of movement are all inherent jazz.
Techniques taught include isolations of the body, polycentrics
(coordinating two or more centers), movements of tension
with spontaneous relaxation, locomotor actions and use of
level changes.
Progressions and combinations are tools used to teach these
techniques. Jazz style is intense and charged, and students
are taught to feel and illustrate the movement. Black jazz
shoes are required.
Pointe and Prepointe
The aesthetic advantages include the elongated line of the
leg, the illusion of weightlessness and the beauty of the
feet. The practical assets include less resistance to the
floor for turns, placement of the weight of the body directly
over supporting toes, and the necessary strengthening of
the foot while training en pointe. The age of the dancer
recommended to begin pointe work depends on her physique,
the level of her technique, and the rate of her progress.
The natural structure of the legs, and especially the feet,
must be considered before a student does pointe work. Pink
ballet or pointe shoes, a leotard and tights are required.
Adult classes
These classes are designed for the not-so-serious adult
who has an appreciation of the art form and a desire to
dance and exercise. Classes are one-hour per discipline
and little or no experience is necessary. Classes begin
at the start of our season in the fall. Performing in our
annual production is strictly optional. Adult classes are
a wonderful way to have fun and meet interesting people.
Couples/Partnering Classes
Learn the basics of how ot dance with a partner. Beginner steps in Foxtrot, Walts, Swing, and Salsa will be taught. Turns and tricks and combinations will help both partners glide around the dance floor. This clss runs in sessions, however one or more sessions may be needed for an individuals practice time and to becomes more advanced.. If you do not have a partner sole dancers are welcome for we can pair you with another dancer. This class is lots of fun, great exercise and a night out.
Dance companies
This progressive program is geared to serious and dedicated
dance students, age 5 and older, who need to challenge their
abilities. Dancers are selected through auditions, which
are held in June. Once selected for a company, dancers continue
classes through the summer to prepare for competitions and
performing functions held throughout the year. |
